MAKEUP EXPIRES: when good makeup goes bad…it’s gone forever

Yes, it’s true! Makeup expires. It is the saddest whenever I have to toss makeup! Ever seen this little guy?

This expiration icon on beauty products is there for a reason! It is typically located on the bottom or in the back of a product. It let’s you know the shelf life of products once they have been open. Just like food, makeup goes bad after some time. If you have had it much longer than the date, it’s time to toss. Beauty products harbor tons of bacteria. Scary, right? If your lipstick smells like crayons, toss!! If your mascara is dry, toss!! Down below is a general idea on when it is time to toss:
  • LIPSTICKS/GLOSS– 1-2 YRS
  • FOUNDATION– 6-12 MONTHS (unless the icon on product says otherwise)
  • CONCEALER– 1 YR
  • MASCARA– 3 MONTHS OR SOONER
  • EYELINER PENCIL– 1 YR
  • LIP LINER PENCIL– 1 YR
  • LIQUID EYELINER– 6 MONTHS
  • EYE SHADOW– 1-2 YRS
  • POWDERS– 1-2 YRS
I’ll admit, it can be difficult monitoring the dates if you are a makeup junkie like moi. Writing the date you purchased a product on the bottom can be helpful. Your best bet on knowing if it’s time to toss is when the product starts to smell weird, ingredients separate, become dry, or just don’t work the same! I am good about sanitizing my makeup cubes, kits, makeup bag, my vanity(it gets messy fast) etc. with alcohol. Be sure to use good sanitizing practices when trying makeup on friends or family.
DON’T TOSS IF IT IS A MAC PRODUCT! Recycle it!
Did you also know that some companies like MAC cosmetics offer a free product when you return 6 full size plastic or glass empty MAC products back to them? All locations offer something different, ie. free lipstick, lip gloss, or eye shadow. Call your nearest MAC location to see what they offer before you go in with your empties!
